Re-Mind-Me ™ Training Pillow:  U.S. Patent # 6,073,288 (also patented in Canada and Europe)

We are pleased to introduce a remarkable, award-winning training pillow to stop "stomach sleeping." Chiropractors tell us not to sleep in the front-down (stomach) position because that posture often leads to neck, shoulder, and/or back pain in adults. The inventor hopes to spare others from the painful problems he suffered due to sleeping on his stomach. That habit was so difficult and costly for him to correct that he was motivated to prevent children from developing the detrimental habit, and to help adults eliminate it from their nightly routines.

Children will use this new pillow to develop proper sleep posture during their youth in order to avoid various painful chiropractic problems during their adult years. And adults will use this special pillow to get rid of their existing stomach-sleeping habits.

Since young bodies are very flexible, children don't feel the
stress associated with front-down sleeping.

And that's the trap!

THAT'S HOW THE BAD HABIT BEGINS!

Recognition:

  • INPEX Invention & New Product Exposition, Pittsburgh, U.S.A. (two awards).
  • Electronic Retailing Association (chosen to display at their show in Las Vegas, U.S.A.).
  • Young Inventors International Innovation Competition, Toronto, Canada (one award).
  • Invent Now America, founded by the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the U.S. Patent Office (chosen to display at their show in Orlando, U.S.A.).
  • Canadian Chiropractor Magazine (two page article about a successful study of the pillow).
  • Independent survey (please see below) shows that stomach-sleeping is a national problem and that nearly two-thirds of households are affected. See below for survey.

Background:

  • Your posture affects your health.
  • Your sleep posture changes several times throughout the night.
  • The three common positions for sleeping are on your back, your side, and your front.
  • Those who sleep in the front-down position during childhood often become very accustomed to that posture and continue to use it throughout the rest of their lives.
  • Front-down sleeping causes stress to the neck, shoulders, and/or back.
  • Chiropractors recommend against the front-down position, as the related stress may lead to painful problems in your adult years.

Why then don't we put more effort into teaching our children about proper sleep posture? Well, the answer's easy -- we don't see a problem that needs fixing. Since our main concern is just getting our children to sleep, their sleep posture is usually ignored. However, our children will pay for this neglect later in life!

Children can tolerate the front-down position, but the older one gets the harder it becomes to eliminate that posture from one's sleep routine. By the time adults figure out that their pain is from the front-down posture, that behavior has become very difficult to correct. Chiropractic treatments and / or therapeutic pillows are often required and, unfortunately, are not always totally successful. By preventing the front-down behavior from becoming a habit during childhood, you will probably save your child from various chiropractic problems when he or she grows up! Remember:

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Benefits:

  • To help train you or your child throughout the entire night. No matter what time you roll on to your front, the training pillow will remind you to reject the front-down position and choose either your side or back.
  • To be there when you can’t. You are not going to be by your child’s bed all night, every night, waiting to correct his/her posture. However, this special pillow can!
  • To help prevent children from getting used to sleeping in the front-down position. Present pillows do not discourage the front-down sleeping behavior.
  • To help reduce and even eliminate a person’s existing front-down sleeping behavior.
  • To help parents teach their children proper sleep postures.

How does it work?

The Re-Mind-Me ™ Training Pillow is comfortable while sleeping on your back or side, but awkward and uncomfortable when trying to sleep on your front. This feature reminds you to shift from the front-down position to either the back or side positions.

You can’t stay with your child all night, every night, waiting to correct his / her posture. But the pillow can! It stays with your child throughout the entire night to "remind" him / her to choose the back and side postures, and to reject the front-down position. After a week or so, the user will be well on his/her way to developing the "off-my-front" behavior, thereby avoiding the front-down habit.

Design:

The Re-Mind-Me ™ Training Pillow is a cut-foam product with a simple design, enabling easy mass-production at an affordable price. It can be made in various styles and sizes (not recommended for children under 5 years of age.)

For children, full-wrap-art pillowcases transform the pillow into an interesting object of fun and amusement -- spaceship, open book, etc.:

Marketing details:

First, people will be attracted by the visual impact of the pillow’s unique shape. Where full-wrap-art pillowcases are displayed, parents as well as children will be fascinated and very curious.

Then, adults will read about the health benefits for themselves and their kids -- what parent wouldn’t want to save his / her child from pain later in life? Consumer acceptance will be enthusiastic!

This product is ready for the North American and European markets. The protected population base is well over 500,000,000. Competition for a child’s training pillow? None! Currently, children are using pillows that encourage rather than discourage tummy-sleeping. It is important to note that this product has received chiropractic endorsement.

Sales will be generated through many channels, including ...

  • Internet shopping sites
  • TV shopping channels
  • TV infomercials
  • Children’s furniture stores
  • Catalogues
  • Mail order
  • Magazine advertisements
  • Chiropractors
  • Massage therapists
  • Physio therapists

Conclusion:

When you consider that "Health & Wellness" is a thriving industry; adults want to avoid pain and therapy; and parents are eager to help their children avoid pain; then it follows that this product will sell around the world, for generations to come.

The pillow’s design is simple and practical; the raw materials are inexpensive; and the necessary manufacturing facilities already exist. These features will ensure easy mass-production at an affordable price.

The Re-Mind-Me ™ Training Pillow will be a very successful product line. Additional sales will come from the unique full-wrap-art pillowcases and the matching bed sheets.

The inventor is seeking one or more established companies to market the product throughout North America, the U.K. and Europe. Ideally, you are already selling various products in the Health & Wellness and / or Children’s markets. The Re-Mind-Me (TM) Training Pillow (plus the "full-wrap-art" pillowcases and matching sheets) would be an addition to your existing lines.

This invention offers great possibilities and is worthy of serious consideration.

Stomach-Sleeping, a National Problem

Public Opinion and Customer Research
October 25, 2007

Sleeping on one’s stomach, known to be associated with neck, back and shoulder pain in adults, appears to be a national problem, according to a recent national survey conducted by COMPAS Research. Nearly two-thirds of households are affected.

Most Canadians (56%) report that they sleep on their stomachs at least some of the time — 5% all of the time, 10% most of the time, 17% sometimes, and 24% occasionally. *

The proportion saying that they never sleep on their stomach is 44%. This group was asked if they knew if other household members did. About a fifth (18%) reported that other members of their household slept on their stomachs. When this response is combined with the previous answers, it looks as if about 65% of Canadian households — almost two-thirds — experience the problem of stomach-sleeping.

These are the main findings from a national representative poll conducted among 500 Canadians (margin of error of 4.5 percentage points 19 times out of 20).  Interviews were conducted by professional interviewers using CATI.  The principal investigator on this study was Dr. Conrad Winn (416-598-0310).

Dr. Darrin Milne, B.Sc., D.C., tested a unique training pillow (refer to www.re-mind-me.com), which is not yet on the market, and found that its use substantially reduces the stomach sleeping habit.  His article on the importance of avoiding the stomach sleeping habit was published in the October 2006 issue of Canadian Chiropractor.  For additional information,  Dr. Milne can be reached at 416-221-1655 (office) or 416-818-9240 (cell).

* The question: “Do you sleep on your stomach all of the time, most of the time, sometimes, occasionally, or never?”
